【Types of Visa】

Visas for Japan are usually sticker-type and are attached to the visa pages of a passport. Depending on the purpose of entry to Japan, one of the 7 following types of visa will be issued: diplomatic, official, working, general, temporary visitor, transit and specified.

【Visa Applications】

(1) Application to visit friends or relatives

Under the current system, a visiting friends or relatives visa is required when visiting Japan on a personal trip. The following documents should be prepared: invitation letter, schedule for stay, identification reference and identification referee and the application procedure should be conducted at the Embassy of Japan in China (Beijing) or any of the Japanese Consulates around the country.
Please note that this procedure is complicated involving strict inspection and it takes time for the visa to be issued. Please refer to the Embassy of Japan in China website for procedures for the “visiting friends or relatives” visa.

(2) Applications for group / family sightseeing visa

When visiting Japan for sightseeing purposes, either a 90 day “group sightseeing visa” or a 15 day “family sightseeing visa” will be issued.
If you book a group trip with a travel agent, the agent will apply for the “group sightseeing visa” on your behalf. If the aim of your visit to Japan is only a short trip, it is recommended that you make the application through a travel agent.
