Departure Procedures

Boarding Procedures

(1) Boarding Procedures

Check-in desks are divided by airline at airports. You are strongly advised to check this before setting off for the airport. When you arrive at the airport, you should first go to the Departures lobby and check in. Please check the flight you will board and its flight number. Then, go through the luggage safety check and boarding pass reception, etc. procedures at the check-in desk. You are required to show your passport and airline ticket at check-in. Check all luggage apart from hand luggage that you will take on to the plane and you will receive a luggage tag for your checked luggage. Checked luggage is limited to 20kg person. (However, some airlines have deals such as loyalty programmes and it may be possible to have excess luggage fees waived up to a weight of 5kg.)
※If you are taking an international flight it is a good idea to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure.
※If you are taking a domestic flight in Japan, it is recommended that you are at the airport at least 30 minutes before departure.

Security Check

(2) Security Check

Once you have completed check-in at the airline counter, there will be a hand luggage and body security check for the safety of passengers. Show you passport and boarding pass to the security officer and place your hand luggage and all metal items in the container provided. This will be sent through the inspection machine. Passengers go through the security inspection gate. If you are stopped when going through the security gate, a security office will check all your pockets, etc.

(3) Customs Procedures

If you are carrying foreign products such as watches or necklaces or more than 1 million Japanese yen in cash, please follow the prescribed procedures at the Customs counter. If you are carrying more than the regulated amount of cash, etc. you are required to report this to Customs. Show the duty-free items that you are carrying and the duty-free receipts you received when you bought them to Customs and go through the necessary procedures. Please note that ordinary passengers are exempt from these procedures.

(4) Passport Control

The last procedure before you board your flight is passport control. Before you can complete this procedure, you need to fill in the embarkation card and show it to the immigration officer along with your passport and boarding pass. Passport control is complete once your documents have been checked and you passport has been stamped. Passport control procedures may take some time depending on the number of passengers so you are advised to undergo these procedures in plenty of time, just in case.

Going to your Gate

(5) Going to your Gate

Check the boarding time and gate number on your boarding pass. Boarding begins 30 minutes before the time of departure so please make your way to the gate in plenty of time.

~How to use the time until you board~

After passport control and until boarding, please take some time to relax. You can shop in the Duty-free shops or enjoy a meal in a restaurant in the boarding area. However, please keep an eye on the flight boarding time. Please also check the boarding gate number against all eventualities. Caution is particularly required at Narita Airport as there are many boarding gates within the airport. Among these, there are some gates in Terminal 2 that can only be reached by train. Trains run approximately every 2 minutes and they take about 2 minutes to arrive at the gates. Please be sure to keep an eye on the time.

(6) Boarding

At the boarding gate, follow the instructions of the airline crew and board the flight after having your boarding pass checked.
