Using public phones

public phones

Due to the widespread use of mobile phones, the number of places installed with public phones is beginning to decrease. However, public phones are still installed in most places that foreign visitors use such as airports, main stations, hotels and ryokan so if you can’t find a public phone, it is a good idea to ask at the nearest information desk.
Japanese public phones accept 10 and 100 yen coins as well as telephone cards. It is possible to use 10 and 100 yen coins when making an international call. When coins or telephone cards are inserted into the phone, the display will show the amount available and once the call is initialized, it will show the number of call minutes available, the remaining amount of money and the telephone number of the person you are making the call to, etc. It is possible to adjust volume and change the display to English so please use these functions if necessary.
