The state of postal services in Japan
The Japanese postal service was privatized in 2007. Japan Post as it was known previously was split up into 4 companies: Japan Post Holdings Co. Ltd. which is the holding company, Japan Post Service Co., Ltd., Japan Post Bank Co., Ltd. and Japan Post Insurance Co., Ltd and Japan Post Network Co., Ltd is commissioned to provide the same postal, savings and insurance services as before in post offices throughout the country. Postage stamps and postcards can also be purchased in places other than post offices such as convenience stores that display the mark on the right.
Post Boxes
Post boxes are generally painted red in Japan. There are also blue post boxes for express delivery and yellow post boxes for international delivery at large depots. Post boxes with multiple slots are widely used in cities and slots are divided into, for example, “postcards, letters and other post” and “normal and express post”.
In Japan, since the change from the Postal Service Agency to Japan Post, the main body of the postal service has created partnerships with convenience stores with the aim of expanding the number of post office counters and post boxes are installed in Lawson, Circle K, Sunkus, and am/pm stores. As convenience stores already sold stamps and postcards prior to this, there are many cases in which post boxes are installed in front of convenience stores.
