Taxi

Taxi

Japanese taxis are similar to taxis in most other countries in that there is a minimum fare for an initial fixed distance, however, because fares rise according to time and distance after this, it can be said that taxis are a mode of transport that is more suited to short-distance travel. Taxis take you right to your destination so it is good to use them when you are going somewhere that is difficult to find or when you are lost.

Taxis are mostly operated by corporations (companies) but there are two types: corporation taxi and private taxi. Basically, these are identical but there is a difference in late-night surcharges: corporation taxis have a 30% surcharge while that of private taxis is 20%.

In other countries, particularly in Europe or America, there is a custom or notion of giving tips but in general, tips are not required in Japan. This is because they are already included as part of the service charge.
